Brief Overview of La Digue Island

La Digue is a small island located within the Seychelles archipelago and conveniently situated near the main island of Mahe.

On La Digue, you will find the most famous Seychellois beaches with white sand and crystal-clear water, offering excellent opportunities for snorkeling, swimming, and other marine activities.

La Digue is also home to the iconic granite formations that are considered one of Seychelles’ signature attractions.

Another hallmark of the island is the giant Seychelles tortoises that freely roam the beaches.

La Digue offers several fantastic hiking trails and remote beaches with natural beauty and minimal tourist crowds.

These are just some of the reasons to spend 2-3 days on the island. To fully enjoy your visit, it’s important to choose accommodation that suits your preferences and budget.

The primary mode of transportation on La Digue is bicycles. The island is small, covering only 10 square kilometers, so you won’t need to worry about the area in which you choose to stay. You can easily reach any destination on a bicycle, which you can rent from accommodation providers or hotel receptions. The variety of hotels, resorts, apartments, and villas is extensive.

The main tourist center of La Digue is located near the port on the western coast of the island. This area encompasses two main villages on La Digue – La Passe and L’Union. These villages host a wide range of accommodations, from luxury hotels to small villas and modest self-catering options.

Near the tourist center, you will find the main landmarks of La DigueL’Union Estate and Anse Source D’Argent beach. This beach, often featured in Seychelles’ travel brochures, consistently ranks among the top beaches for beach vacations in Seychelles.

Best Hotels and Apartments on La Digue

For your convenience, I have divided accommodation into three categories: luxury, mid-range, and self-catering.

The self-catering category includes villas, apartments, or separate houses with one or two bedrooms, a kitchen, a balcony or terrace, and all necessary amenities.

These accommodations do not have a concierge, reception, or other hotel services, which are often unnecessary for independent travelers.

Hotels offer various meal plans, including breakfast, half-board (breakfast and dinner), full-board (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), and all-inclusive.

Luxury Resorts on La Digue

Le Domaine de L’Orangeraie – This exquisite resort is situated in the Anse Severe area and is perfect for young couples looking to have a fantastic vacation. It is located on the northern coast of La Digue Island. The resort features a luxurious pool overlooking the Indian Ocean, two restaurants, a spa center offering massages and other body and facial treatments, a sauna, a gym, and childcare services. It’s an excellent choice for those seeking a luxurious tropical getaway without compromise.

Le Repaire – Boutique Hotel & Restaurant – An exceptionally beautiful seaside resort in the L’Union village, Anse Reunion area. It boasts an excellent location and is suitable for all travelers. I recommend booking rooms with ocean views and a neighboring view of Praslin Island. This resort has its own bar, a restaurant with exquisite cuisine, and offers diving and boat fishing excursions. You can also rent bicycles to explore this small but picturesque island.

Le Nautique – A highly renowned hotel that ranks among the top three on La Digue. Located in La Passe village, it caters to both business travelers and families seeking quality accommodation. In my opinion, it offers the best value for money in its category. The rooms are spacious, each with a patio overlooking the pool or the ocean. There’s a restaurant, a bar, and the ferry jetty is just 300 meters away.

Mid-Range Hotels on La Digue

Mid-range accommodations offer slightly less luxury but still provide quality services at reasonable, Seychelles-scale prices.

Hotel Chateau St Cloud 3* – A peaceful place with an excellent buffet breakfast included in the Anse Reunion area. It’s close to the best beaches and landmarks, with plenty of cafes and restaurants, including budget-friendly options nearby. It’s one of the best budget-friendly lodging options on La Digue if you prefer staying in a hotel. This hotel offers the best value for money in its category and features a pool and a bar. The hotel building itself has historical significance, once serving as one of the first plantation houses on a local farm that grew vanilla. The castle has been renovated, expanded, and rightfully enjoys popularity among tourists.

Patatran Village Hotel – Located in La Passe village in the north of La Digue, next to one of the most photogenic beaches in the archipelago, Anse Patates. This is an ideal choice for family couples who love comfort and active leisure. The hotel offers half-board accommodations, including breakfast and dinner, which is convenient for those who spend most of the day exploring the island’s attractions and beaches. The rooms come with balconies, air conditioning, and there’s a pool on the premises for evening relaxation, as well as barbecue facilities. Nearby Anse Patates features several fantastic coral reefs for snorkeling.

La Digue Island Lodge – A typical lodge featuring triangular Seychellois-style houses in the L’Union Estate village, Anse Reunion area. It’s designed for those who want to experience Seychellois-style living and immerse themselves in the local atmosphere with comfort at an affordable price. The lodge boasts an L-shaped pool with a bar and a restaurant serving Creole cuisine, located right on the beach. You can also arrange fishing trips and guided hikes with local guides on lesser-known routes.

Budget Accommodation on La Digue

Seychelles is not always about big money and luxury vacations. Every island offers numerous budget-friendly accommodation options at prices roughly equivalent to those in Central Europe, ranging from 70 to 110 euros per night.

Typically, these are private villas available for rent either entirely or as individual apartments, small houses with basic amenities, and the option to cook your own meals.

Cocotier du Rocher – Excellent budget accommodation in a lovely location in La Passe village. Suitable for those who aren’t willing to spend too much and prefer basic comfort with the ability to cook meals independently or combine home-cooked and budget café dining. I also recommend these options for family vacations with children. Each accommodation includes a patio, a small kitchen, a bathroom, air conditioning, and internet. The beaches are just a few minutes’ walk or bike ride away, depending on the beach’s location.

O’Soleil Chalets – Also located in La Passe village, with its own kitchen, bike rental, and affordable eateries nearby. There’s a ferry terminal within a few minutes’ bike ride. The hosts can pick you up from the ferry with an electric car if you have luggage. The accommodations feature a barbecue area, spacious rooms, a fridge, a shower, a toilet, and fully equipped kitchens.

Chez Mera – Situated in Anse Reunion village, a 3-minute walk to the beach, and close to one of the world’s most beautiful beaches, Anse Source D’Argent. It offers a clean, cozy, and homey atmosphere, mini-kitchens, terraces, and everything you need for comfortable living. Bike rentals are available, and the host can meet you at the ferry and transport your luggage. The ferry terminal is a 20-minute walk or 2-minute bike ride away.

Lucy’s guesthouse – A guesthouse in Anse Reunion village that offers everything you need, including a kitchen. There’s a green lawn in front of the guesthouse, making it an excellent option for travelers with children. Our friends stayed here, and I can recommend this budget-friendly option to independent travelers.

Don’t forget!

Finding and purchasing an airplane ticket earlier will result in a cheaper ticket and a better selection of departure dates. There are excellent flights available from Dubai (UAE) and Doha (Qatar) airports

Buying insurance is highly recommended. You may never need it, but in case you do, it will safeguard your money, health, and provide peace of mind.

Make sure to reserve a car if you plan to visit islands like Mahe and Praslin. There are no cars on La Digue, and transportation between beaches is resolved by renting bicycles, which you can get where you stay.

Diversify your vacation!

In addition to La Digue, it’s worth visiting Mahe Island, the main island of the archipelago, where you’ll find many beautiful beaches and interesting places. For the same reason, include the incredible Praslin Island in your travel itinerary.
