Barcelona plans to increase the tourist tax from €3.25 to €4 per person per night. This idea has been supported by the municipal council.

Additionally, the city council is urging the Catalan government to lift the current cap on local tourist taxes, which would allow for further increases in fees. Currently, Barcelona collects €95 million annually from the tourist tax. However, expenses for cleaning, security, and transportation related to tourism amount to €142 million.

With the increase in the tourist tax, Barcelona hopes to reduce the budget deficit and expects to collect an additional €20 million. The total amount of tourist revenues will reach €115 million. These changes are expected to take effect as early as October 2024.
