This will be a new regional carrier that intends to operate from the airports of Munich and Frankfurt.

Many long-haul flights by Lufthansa depart from there as well. Lufthansa, the flagship airline of Europe, is launching a new airline – City Airlines, for short-term operations on the continent.

City Airlines is expected to commence operations in July 2024. The German group announced this in their press release on Wednesday.

The company’s launch goal is to reduce Lufthansa’s costs and strengthen competitiveness on short routes in Europe.

Currently, this segment is predominantly managed by another Lufthansa subsidiary, Lufthansa CityLine, whose cost structure has long been considered too expensive by management.

According to the press release, both subsidiary companies “will continue to operate simultaneously.”

In November, the new airline, City Airlines, begins to recruit employees, prompting pilots from the Lufthansa CityLine team to renegotiate contracts. Unions are unhappy with the new employment strategy, believing that the new contracts will be less socially beneficial than the existing ones.

Simultaneously, the CEO of City Airlines asserts that they are creating prospects for the company’s long-term operation to ensure sustainable jobs.
