A Spanish TikToker burst into tears at the airport after ChatGPT told her she didn’t need a visa. Spoiler alert – she did. And the internet wasn’t kind.
Planning a romantic getaway to Puerto Rico? Just make sure your travel advisor isn’t a chatbot. One Spanish influencer learned it the hard (and very public) way.
Mery Caldass trusted ChatGPT to confirm whether she needed a visa. The AI said “no”, so she packed her bags and headed to the airport. What could go wrong? Everything.
“I asked ChatGPT and it said no,” she sobbed in her TikTok video.
🧾 Quick Note:
Puerto Rico is not just a tropical paradise – it’s a territory of the United States.
✔ EU citizens don’t need a visa, but they must apply for ESTA – an electronic travel authorization.
✖ Everyone else? A U.S. visa is required. No exceptions.
Caldass admitted she didn’t double-check on any official site. “That’s what I get,” she said through tears.
And the internet? Not too sympathetic:
– “You could’ve just Googled it…”
– “Puerto Rico has the same visa rules as the U.S., how do you not know this?”
– “ChatGPT isn’t a travel agent, girl!”
But every sad TikTok needs a happy ending. The next day, Mery posted a new video – smiling at a Bad Bunny concert in Puerto Rico. Apparently, ESTA was filed. No AI required this time.
AI tools are fun and smart – but not for handling border control. When it comes to visas, skip the chatbot and trust government websites instead.
